Directing Course Structure

Drama Studio London’s Directing Course is one of the longest running in the country. It is designed to help you to develop a way of working that will support you in your professional career.

The course is intensive and specialised. It usually has just one or two students each year and contains considerable levels of individual tuition.

Nine projects
Your work is developed through nine practical projects, starting with a speech in the first term and culminating with a play in the final term. As these projects become more complex, the process opens out to look at all aspects of mounting a professional production.

During the first half of the course, the projects are realised with students from the Drama Studio London Acting Course, and during the second half, with professional actors.

Classes, seminars, workshops
These are run in parallel to the projects. Classes are all taught by working professionals, who are attuned to the shifting demands of the world in which they work. You work closely with them and, where possible, observe and take part in their professional productions outside the school.

The seminars and workshops are also designed to develop your understanding of a professional director’s relationships with other members of the creative team.

Classes and seminars are usually held during the day, while rehearsals and workshops are in the evenings and some weekends.
