Janet is known for her acclaimed roles at The Royal Shakespeare Company, including Joan of Arc in The Wars of The Roses (1962–64), Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s Lost (1965), Portia in The Merchant of Venice (1965) and Ophelia in Hamlet (1964). She has been highly praised for her performance of Cleopatra (1973). She has also played roles in some of the world’s classic plays over her five-decade long career.
On screen she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna in Nicholas and Alexandra (1971).
