BA Hons: Course Structure

Teaching is split into our 5 departments with extra classes on Professional Preparation later on in the course. The 5 teaching departments are:

  • Acting/Performance
  • Voice
  • Media
  • Movement
  • Education

Throughout our courses we balance our teaching with performances.

Year One

Term 1 (Winter Term)

ACTING - Stanislavski, impulse, characterisation, text, stagecraft, 20th & 21st-century drama
VOICE - Voice, speech, singing
MEDIA - Intro to screen acting, the recording studio, intro to radio drama, groups and monologue work
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, physical theatre, combat
EDUCATION - Theatre history, history of dance, theories of acting, health and safety, intro to written work

Term 2 (Spring Term)

ACTING - Stanislavski, emotional dynamics, text, characterisation, sight reading, approach to text, improvisation, stagecraft, scene work on late 20th-century drama
VOICE - Voice, speech, phonetics, singing
MEDIA - Contemporary and soaps, radio in groups
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, physical theatre, combat, show dance
EDUCATION - Context and research, theatre history, history of dance, theories of acting

Term 3 (Summer Term)

PERFORMANCE - Scenes work project
ACTING - Scenarios, impulse, emotional dynamics, text, characterisation, sight reading, text into performance, improvisation, stagecraft, scene work on early 20th-century drama
VOICE - Voice, character voice, speech, phonetics, singing
MEDIA - Detectives and medical, radio in groups, audio books
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, Laban, physical theatre, combat, partner dance
EDUCATION - Context and research, theatre history, early 20th-century drama, theories of acting

Year Two

Term 4 (Winter Term)

PERFORMANCE - Scene studies 1 (non-naturalism) and Scene Studies 2 (Greek tragedy)
ACTING - Meisner Technique, emotional dynamics, classical texts, improvisation, stagecraft
VOICE - Voice, accents, speech, singing
MEDIA - Situation and sketch comedy, poetry, radio ads, promos
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, Laban, physical theatre, combat, show dance
EDUCATION - Verse drama
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Sight reading for auditions

Term 5 (Spring Term)

PERFORMANCE - Scene studies 3 (American) and Scene Studies 4 (devised theatre)
ACTING - Impulse, character, storytelling, improvisation, stagecraft
VOICE - Voice, accents, speech, singing
MEDIA - Period drama, documentary, voice over and continuity, dubbing, lip synch, animation, corporates, English language training
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, physical theatre, combat, flamenco
EDUCATION - Theatre history, Chekhov and Stanislavski, 20th-century American theatre, technical and stage management
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Sight reading for auditions

Term 6 (Summer Term)

PERFORMANCE - Scene Studies 5 (20th Century Naturalism) and Scene Studies 6 (Shakespeare)
ACTING - Emotional dynamics, classical text, improvisation, stagecraft
VOICE - Voice, accents, speech, singing
MEDIA - Period drama, Shakespeare, dubbing, lip synch, animation.
MOVEMENT - Movement, yoga, animal, physical theatre, combat, period movement
EDUCATION - Theatre history, Shakespeare workshops and tutorials, Shakespeare
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Sight reading for auditions, photos and castings

Year 3

Term 7 (Winter Term)

PERFORMANCE - Scene Studies 7 (Shakespeare/Jacobean) and Scene Studies 8 (Theatre in the Community)
VOICE - Voice, speech, rhetorical speech, singing
MEDIA - Dubbing, lip synch, animation, voice over agents and commercials
MOVEMENT - Movement, combat, creating your own choreography
EDUCATION - Theatre history, Theatre in the Community, Entertainments
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Auditions, interview techniques, corporate role play, CVs and letter writing, the agents and the profession

Term 8 (Spring Term)

PERFORMANCE* - Scene Studies 9 (period play) and Showcase, Public Performance 1
VOICE - Voice, speech, singing
MEDIA - Film project, radio ads, showreel
MOVEMENT - Movement, combat, dance, dance auditions for actors
EDUCATION - Restoration text
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Auditions, interview techniques, mock auditions, singing auditions, sight reading at auditions, commercial auditions, letter writing, arts funding, work week, Spotlight

Term 9 (Summer Term)

PERFORMANCE* - Graduating production 2 (Ensemble), graduating production 3
VOICE - Voice, speech
MEDIA - Film project, commercials, showreel
MOVEMENT - Movement
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION - Auditions, interview techniques, mock auditions, sight reading at screen auditions, commercial auditions, the actor’s finances, Spotlight

*If it is not possible to mount professional productions, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will provide all students with a show reel that will equally launch students into the profession.If this is the case, the final term will comprise preparation and filming of the show reels, audio and visual. This will include appropriate sessions in self taping and audio dubbing.
